About Dr. David Nylund

Dr. David Nylund, LCSW, Ph.D. #14463 (Curriculum Vitae)

Dr. David Nylund has been a practicing therapist with over 25 years of clinical experience in a broad array of settings including community mental health, non-profit agencies, managed care, and private practice. He uses a positive present-focused approach to help build self-acceptance as the basis for all changes and growth.

David specializes in working with people suffering from anxiety and depression; relationship issues trauma and abuse; life transitions (grief and loss, divorce, career changes, etc.); children and teens struggling with emotional and behavioral difficulties; youth and adults with eating/food related issues; substance abuse problems; marital issues; parenting difficulties; and family therapy.

Dr. Nylund is also an Associate Professor of Social Work at California State University, Sacramento; he conducts workshops for mental health professionals nationwide and internationally; and he is a respected scholar in family therapy. 

He has published many articles on counseling and is the author of several books including Treating Huckleberry Finn: A New Narrative Approach with Kids Diagnosed ADD/ADHD and the co-editor (with Craig Smith) of Narrative Therapies with Children and Adolescents.  In addition to publishing various articles and book chapters on family therapy, Dr. Nylund presents his work (Nylund & Tilsen) throughout North America, Europe, and Japan

Dr. Nylund holds academic degrees from the University of California, Davis (Ph.D., Cultural Studies), California State University, Sacramento (Master of Social Work), and Michigan State University (Criminal Justice). He is a Certified Trainer of 
CDOI with the Institute for the Study of Therapeutic Change.

He enjoys hanging out with friends and family; reading fiction; dancing; golfing; watching his beloved Detroit Redwings; thinking about his next book; practicing Spanish; and having his son, Drake, try to convert him to be a techie geek.
